Mickleover Golf Club Tees Off Centenary Year With Charity Pledge

Mickleover Golf Club has pledged to support a local charity which supports hundreds of disabled children, young adults and their families across Derbyshire in this, its centenary year.

A wide range of events have been planned throughout the year by the club in Uttoxeter Road with the proceeds going to towards its extensive play and leisure programme.

The fundraising is being driven by club captains Mitch Handley and Margaret Brooks who met with Umbrella CEO Ann Rowlands to officially launch the fundraising pledge.

Mr Handley has been a member of Mickleover Golf Club for 20 years.  He said: “It is a huge honour to be Club Captain in our centenary year and we have a fantastic programme of events planned from special matches to an outdoor concert.

“My family have been long-term supporters of Umbrella and I am delighted that they will our charity of the year throughout 2023.”

Lady Captain Mrs Brooks has been a member at Mickleover since 1976 and was last in this lead role in 1996.  She added: “I have very personal reasons for wanting to support Umbrella during my year as Lady Captain as my granddaughter Charlotte has several learning disabilities and complex needs which mean she will always need the care and support from others.

“Although she does not live in Derbyshire, I know how much she and the family benefit from play schemes and respite care and, therefore, the huge importance of the similar support that Umbrella provides to families in this area.”

Ann Rowlands is CEO of Umbrella which has centres in Mackworth, Bedford Close and at Derbyshire Children’s Hospital – offering a wide range of support for children and young adults with physical and learning disabilities as well as the wider family.

She concluded: “Mickleover Golf Club have been incredibly supportive of our small charity over the years and we are deeply grateful to be chosen as their Charity of the Year during such an important time in the club’s 100-year history.

“Our Play and Leisure Services range from youth clubs and the Raindrops Choir to a siblings group and day trips for the whole family and are a vital and joyful lifeline to everyone that we support.

“Every penny donated by Mickleover Golf Club will go towards supporting this aspect of our work and we look forward to sharing the feedback and thanks of our children, young adults and families to the club members throughout their centenary year.”
