A LEVEL SUCCESS AT DERBY COLLEGE
The largest ever cohort of A level students at Derby College’s Joseph Wright Centre have achieved a 99% pass rate for the third year running today . (Thursday August 18).
Nearly 400 students collected their results from the city centre campus today and the majority are now heading to their first or second choice universities – relieved that they are not having to battle for the limited places on offer through the clearing system.
Nineteen subjects saw 100% pass rates including all the Science and Maths subjects. Furthermore, 65% of Maths students achieved A or B results which was, according to Head of Faculty Kate Martin, a fitting tribute to Maths teacher John Moakes (58) who died suddenly on July 12.
Twenty two students achieved the new A* top grade in a variety of subjects including Sociology, Business, Law, Fine Art, Maths and the Freestanding Project.
AS results are also looking excellent and BTEC National vocational students have performed well with many students achieving triple distinctions which are equivalent to A grades at A level.
Kate Martin said: “We are delighted with the results. The fact that we have achieved a 99% pass rate for the third year running and with our largest ever cohort of students is testament to the hard work of the students themselves, the staff here and the support that the students have had at home.
“It has been a particularly nerve wracking summer for the students who have been keen to gain their chosen places this year due to the increases in University tuition fees the following September and the reported limited places that are now available through clearing.
“Thankfully, the majority of our students have achieved the grades they needed to go onto their chosen universities.
“We are supporting those who have not gained the grades they had hoped for – helping them through the clearing process and also advising them on the other options available to them such as apprenticeships and the Foundation Degrees available here at Derby College.”
