Bursary Award for Derby College Student

A life-size Origami swan, created using hundreds of intricately folded pieces of paper, has earned a Derby College student a £300 bursary award from Derby Decorative and Fine Arts Society.

Art Foundation Diploma student Sophie Clouston (19) from Derby was one of five students based at The Roundhouse who were shortlisted for the Bursary award.

Their work, which ranged from fashion and decorative arts to illustration and Fine Art, was presented and judged by members of the Society who were faced with the tough decision to pick a winner.

Young Arts Representative Anita Pearson said: “We have awarded a bursary every year for the past 14 years to a Derby College student to support them in their University studies.

“The standard is always very high but this year it was particularly difficult to choose a winner.

“We wish all the finalists the best of luck in their future studies and were particularly impressed with the skill and creativity shown by Sophie who has produced something so incredible.”

Sophie, who attended Ecclesbourne School before doing the one year pre-degree foundation course at Derby College, took her inspiration for The Swan from a Roald Dahl short story.

“I wanted to create something that could be used as a 3D model to market the book in a shop and decided to use Origami to create the model.

“It was a lot of trial and error at the beginning as I have not used any glue. All the pieces of paper are inter-linked and I needed to get the size and weight of all the hundreds of pieces of folded paper just right.

“The Swan equates to two months of solid work and I am really pleased with the results.  The Bursary has particularly made all the hard work worthwhile and will be extremely useful for materials and equipment for my Illustration course at Norwich University College of the Arts later this year.”

The Swan and other work created by Art and Design students at Derby College will be open for public view at The Roundhouse, Joseph Wright Centre and Heanor campuses next week (w/c June 13) when the College opens its doors for the annual Celebration Week.

Art exhibitions are open from Tuesday to Friday and other highlights include two spectacular Fashion Hair and Beauty shows at The Roundhouse on Tuesday June 14 and Wednesday June 15 from 7pm onwards and music performances at the Joseph Wright Centre.
